Hiruko is a Demon in the Raidou series.

Profile

Hiruko are named after the Japanese deity of the same name. He was the first son of Izanagi and Izanami, but was abandoned in a reed boat because of his deformities. He is also equated with Ebisu, a Japanese god of fishing. Within the Raidou series, they are the matured form of a Red Cape.

Hiruko are born from Hiruko elements, a substance present within all humans. These elements typically stay dormant, but when a person wells up with despair and anxiety the Hiruko will begin to rapidly feed off secretions in the brain that control anxiety, causing the human to become progressively more unstable and anxious. This process repeats until the Hiruko matures inside its host. At this point, a red substance protrudes from the host's body to create protective layer similar to a butterfly's cocoon, and the host fully transforms into a Red Cape. Once the Hiruko grows to its adult stage within its host, it will detach itself from the body like a butterfly, leaving behind a body devoid of Spirit. In some cases, the host can recover from the ejection of the Hiruko if they are given immediate medical treatment, but they will turn into an Undead demon if left unchecked.

Yomi-kugutsu are created when a Red Cape is captured and implanted with a device that allows them to control their powers and mental instability. Once the Hiruko leaves a host that has an implant, the original body cannot be returned to its human state. The husk of a body is then outfitted with weapons and armor to turn it into a Yomi-kugutsu.
