Profile

Origin

Ebisu (恵比寿(えびす)), also known as ゑびす Yebisu, えびっさん Ebissan, えべっさん Ebessan, or おべっさん Obessan, is the Japanese deity of fishing and commerce affiliated with the Seven Lucky Gods. The first records of Ebisu appear in the 3-fascicle edition of Iroha Jiruishō, a Kanji dictionary authored in the late Heian period (circa 1177-1188) by Tachibana Tadakane.

Among the many cultural interpretations surrounding Ebisu, some identify him with Izanagi and Izanami's first son Hiruko, while a few attribute him to Kotoshironushi, Sukuna-Hikona, or Hikohohodemi. Others regard him as a non-native deity, rendering えびす Ebisu in Kanji as 戎 (outsider) or 夷 (barbarian); the Japanese Government employed either Kanji in a similar fashion when referring to foreigners or people from the East.

Depending on the interpretation, Ebisu Shrines' names may have their Kanji readings changed to reflect the deities he is attributed to. For example, some shrines' names are read as 蛭子(ひるこ)神社(じんじゃ) (Hiruko Shrine) instead of 蛭子(えびす)神社(じんじゃ) (Ebisu Shrine), as Hiruko and Ebisu are often seen as one in the same. On the other hand, certain Ebisu Shrines worship Ebisu as Kotoshironushi instead of Hiruko.
