Origin

The Red Cape is considered the pioneer of modern urban legends and the prototype for Hanako-san. It is said that while using a toilet, a voice asks for a choice between a red cape and a blue cape, but either choice results in death. This legend originates from the anxieties surrounding Japan's rapid social changes and militarization during the Taisho era, symbolized by the capes of military police.

Within the Raidou series, a Red Cape is the pupal form of a Hiruko. They were given the name "Red Cape" by the citizens of The Capital because their red bodies reminded people of the urban legend; this moniker was also used by citizens to refer to the Yomi-kugutsu, as both entities were unknown to the public and spawned similar rumors about a mysterious red-colored figure wreaking havoc across Tokyo.

Inside of every human resides a substance known as a "Hiruko Element." This substance remains dormant until a person wells up with feelings of intense anxiety and despair, at which point the Hiruko activates and begins to feed off of the secretions in the brain that control those emotions. As these secretions get consumed, it becomes increasingly more difficult for the human to control their anxiety, which produces more secretions. This cycle of production and consumption continues until the Hiruko matures within the host, at which point it will cover the host's body with a protective red substance similar to a butterfly's cocoon, which turns the human into a Red Cape. The Hiruko will continue to develop within the Red Cape and ejects itself from its host once it is fully grown, dispelling the red substance and leaving behind a human body that lacks Spirit, which becomes an Undead demon if left untreated.

In order to manufacture a Yomi-kugutsu, a Red Cape must be captured and implanted with a device that allows them to control their strength and suppress their mental instability. Once the Hiruko leaves a host that has an implant, the body is outfitted with weapons and armor to turn it into a Yomi-kugutsu.

Trivia

• There is unused data for two versions of a Red Cape boss in the PlayStation Portable version of Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner. In the data, it is located before the similarly-unused Yomi-kugutsu and the PSP superbosses. Its name is spelled あかマント rather than the spelling used in the Raidou Kuzunoha games. Its demon IDs are 132 and 133 in hexadecimal.
