This article is about the character from Persona 4. For the Persona 5 character with the codename "Fox", see Yusuke Kitagawa.

The Fox is a character in Persona 4.

Profile

The fox lives on the shrine grounds of Tatsuhime Shrine. It enlists the protagonist's help in fulfilling wishes written on wooden ema tablets that have been hung up at the shrine. Starting with the Steamy Bathhouse, the fox also joins the Investigation Team in the TV World and can be paid to restore the party's SP with special leaves in the studio-looking area.

The fox is designed as a normal fox wearing a red apron with a heart pattern. Red aprons are commonly found on Jizo statues and fox statues at Japanese shrines due to the belief that red can ward away evil spirits. Culturally, foxes are said to be the messengers of Inari, and the presence of the fox statues at Tatsuhime Shrine suggest the sub-shrine is dedicated to Inari.

Game Appearances

Persona 4

The Fox first appears on May 5th when the protagonist visits Tatsuhime Shrine during Golden Week. It leaps from the rooftop of the main hall and gives him a wooden ema with a leaf stuck to the back, and a wish written by a grandson who hopes his grandfather's legs get better. The grandfather, who also takes care of the shrine, shows up shortly after and recognizes the leaf stuck to the ema as a remedy for aches and pains. The protagonist gives him the healing leaf and it makes his legs feel better. Observing how much energy the older man has, the protagonist thinks these leaves would be useful for the Investigation Team's battles in the TV World. The fox seems to understand what the protagonist is thinking and gestures towards the shrines' offertory box. The protagonist intuits that it will help for a fee. After this interaction, the fox shows up in the Junes food court besides the protagonist, who explains to the rest of the group that it will help them in exchange for money.

Hermit Social Link

After completing all of the fox's ema requests, the protagonist visits the fox at the shrine once more and intuits that the fox is concerned about the offertory box. When the protagonist looks into the box, he realizes the fox was worried because the offertory box has been emptied. Shortly after, a construction crew shows up and renovates the shrine gate and offertory box, finishing them with gold.

On March 20th, when the protagonist visits the shrine, he finds an old man there who mentions he heard a fox had started living at the shrine and that it might be taken to an animal shelter. The protagonist does not see the fox there and wonders if it was really taken to a shelter, but the fox appears from the top of the shrine and jumps down to the protagonist, this time introducing him to its three children.
