Cronus is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Origin

In the Ancient Greek religion, the Titan Cronus, also spelled Cronos or Kronos,[a] is the youngest son of Uranus and Gaia, and he was since at least the Roman era considered the god of the reckoning of time,[1][2][3] perhaps due to phonetic similarity with the Greek word for "time".

Using a scythe given to him by Gaia, Cronus castrated and overthrew his father to become king of the gods, ruling during what was known as the Golden Age, but a prophecy stated that Cronus would too be overthrown by his children (the Olympian gods). He decided to swallow his children to prevent them from doing so; however, his wife Rhea secretly saved their youngest son Zeus from being eaten by having Cronus eat a rock instead, and when Zeus reached adulthood, he would go on to fulfill the prophecy and overthrow his father and rescue his siblings from Cronus's stomach. After this, Cronus was imprisoned in Tartarus.

The Romans identified Cronus with their own god Saturnus,[1] though unlike Saturnus, Cronus was not a harvest deity.[4] Other deities identified with Cronus include the Phoenician El[5] and the Egyptian Geb.

The festival of Kronia in summer was dedicated to the Golden Age presided over by Cronus.

Kronos is the previous identity of Saturnus and is mentioned by his new identity and by his son Zeus. In the past Kronos was reinterpreted into a more benevolent entity by humanity, changing Kronos into Saturnus. However despite gaining greater admiration for worship from humanity in this new form Saturnus still felt the hatred that Kronos felt towards Zeus for usurping him, driving him to seek vengeance against him.

When Saturnus is defeated by the Nahobino, should Zeus be in the party he will appear and lament that his father was unable to let go of his past as Kronos, admitting that despite their conflicts Zeus still respected and aspired to be like his father.[6]
