Though the mechanics differ depending on the game, a chance encounter typically happens when the player takes the enemy by surprise. This can occur at random or if the player successfully strikes the enemy on the field, usually through a sword slash or some other kind of attack.

When the player begins a battle through a chance encounter, they are oftentimes given a free turn during which the enemy is unable to act, allowing the party to take action uninterrupted.

Battles prompted by a chance encounter will begin with the player's turn.

Shin Megami Tensei IV===

A chance encounter will occur if a demon symbol is struck from any direction by the player's sword slash.

Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse===

A chance encounter will occur if a demon symbol is struck from any direction by the player's sword slash.

Striking a Shadow when unnoticed by the enemy in Tartarus will trigger a chance encounter.

Persona 3 Reload

If the player starts a battle with the initiative in Reload, It's Going Down Now will play in the background instead of Mass Destruction.

  1. "Attacking Demon Symbols: By pressing the Y Button to attack a demon symbol, you will enter battle with that demon. Take the demon by surprise, and you will earn the initiative in battle. If the demon takes notice of your attack, then the initiative will be decided by chance. Battles will often play out in your favor if you gain the initiative, so remember to strike first."
