Origin

Principalities come from Colossians 1:16, which mentions that God is the creator of thrones, dominions, principalities, and powers; this is interpreted by some as referring to kinds of angels. This is reinforced by the Catholic angelic hierarchy, where they are referenced to be at the top of the Third Sphere of angels. Principality's original Latin name, principatus, is also translatable to "Princedom" or "Ruler".

Principalities are portrayed as angels that are responsible for ruling, leading, and guiding people, groups, and institutions, especially the Church. They also preside over groups of lower level angels, specifically Archangels and Angels. Principalities primarily take orders from Dominions, the leaders of the Second Sphere.
