Akira was a little boy who lived in Tokyo with his older sister 25 years ago, when demons had suddenly invaded and attacked the city.[1] His sister was taken by the Angels as one of the innocents chosen by God, to be sent away in one of their Cocoons to a new world. The fates of Akira and his sister ultimately became tied to the fates of Tokyo.

If Tokyo's fate aligned with Law, the Cocoons had left and Tokyo became utterly destroyed in God's Plan, turning it into a desert wasteland.[2] Akira in turn became a leader to the survivors. If Tokyo's fate aligned with Chaos, the Angels were defeated before the Cocoons could leave and God's Plan was prevented,[3][4] however the children inside them could not be freed in time and rotted away, including Akira's sister. In the ensuing chaos and infighting, Akira was among those who became a Demonoid. Both of these Akiras are visited when the White sends Flynn, Walter, and Jonathan to their respective parallel worlds. The parallel Akiras each confide their desire to create a new world of the opposing ideal and, in honor of the three Samurai for their help, assert they will name their new worlds the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado.

In the present world, Flynn's past incarnation chose to protect Tokyo from God's Plan by summoning Masakado, who became the Firmanent and shielded the city from the oncoming ICBMs. By then, the Cocoons had already left Tokyo and the young Akira was left with a strong resolve to save his sister. At some point he had managed to obtain the Demon Summoning Program.[1] While at Shinjuku National Park, he had met Fujiwara and told him of his desire to rescue his sister by going "above the ceiling".[1] The idea impressed Fujiwara and inspired him to band with the Counter-Demon Force in excavating a tunnel through the Firmanent to its surface. Akira had accompanied them at some point.

When the Counter-Demon Force had finally reached the surface, they were immediately attacked by the Angels in an effort to protect God's chosen. However, Akira had forged a plan to reunite God's chosen with the citizens of Tokyo by feigning an alliance with the Angels. Using his demons, Akira drove back the other Counter-Demon Force members.[5] He left one of his demons, the Minotaur, to guard the sealed tunnel depths. In the Clipped Wings downloadable content, it is added that Akira had also enlisted the aid of Mastema in sealing away three of the archangels in Kagome Tower. Gabriel remained free, whose power was significantly diminished without her cohorts. The same downloadable content also mentions that Aeshma was another of Akira's demons.

With the archangels' power in check, Akira had founded the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado on the Firmanent, becoming its first monarch as King Aquila.[6] He also founded the order of the Samurai to protect the kingdom as its first Samurai.[5] At some point King Aquila had died. His memory lives on through his recounted tales in the Obelisk Plaza and his giant statue in Aquila Plaza.

He said he was going to rescue his big sis from the angels. And he swore he go above the ceiling someday to do it. It was a childish idea, but it really threw me. Go above the ceiling...? I would never have thought of it! He was a special kid, that one... What was his name again... Oh yeah, I think he called himself Akira..." Shin Megami Tensei IV.
  2. "Hunter man: I'm a survivor of the Counter-Demon Force. Not a day goes by that I don't think about what happened 25 years ago. I couldn't protect Tokyo from God's wrath... I work as a Hunter now to atone for that failure." Shin Megami Tensei IV.
  3. "Male neurisher: It's all Kenji's fault that Tokyo's like this... Just because he defied God... Huh? Archangels? Nah, can't be. Kenji supposedly killed all the angels." Shin Megami Tensei IV.
  4. "Female demonoid: Kenji was originally from the Counter-Demon Force. He was about your age at the time... He joined the force to fight demons and protect Tokyo... But then he learned that the reason demons showed up in the first place was part of God's scheme... After that, he sided with the demons to stop God's wrath. That was 25 years ago..." Shin Megami Tensei IV.
  5. 5.0 5.1 "Epigraph: In the long ago war of the angels and demons, one soldier stood with the angels. Like the Unclean Ones, this soldier summoned demons; but he did so to combat the demonic hordes. With this power, the soldier forced the demons into the underworld, and sealed the path to their country... This soldier was the first Samurai, as well as the first monarch of the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado... Aquila. King Aquila's great achievement is the reason why Samurai are even today the cornerstone of our defenses." Shin Megami Tensei IV.
  6. "Epigraph: In the first year of the Gregorian calendar, King Aquila established the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado in this land. The king built a kingdom in the sealed land and prayed to God. His subjects, following his example, prayed as well. Under God's watchful eye, the people were guaranteed equality and peace everlasting." Shin Megami Tensei IV.
