As the three walk home, snow falls upon the city, which has been happening across the world since the day before. Setsuna wonders if it is the work of ghosts, but unbeknownst to the kids, the Nightmares from Ice Land secretly observe them. Setsuna retreats to his apartment to warm up, when suddenly, the deliveryman crashes through the wall, hands over the parcel, and dies. Nightmare then enters the apartment, addressing Setsuna as the Devil Child possessing a Messiah's Horn. Grabbing a broken piece of wood, Setsuna strikes Nightmare's neck, only to have it turned against him and stabbed through his heart. Nightmare takes the Messiah's Horn, the true name of his father's pendant, causing Setsuna to erupt with rage. As a pentagram flares on his forehead and his wounds get miraculously healed, he quickly reaches for the parcel. The packaging erupts into flames and transforms into a Deviliser, which Setsuna fires at Nightmare, blasting him out of the apartment.

In firing the Deviliser, Cool the Cerberus appears before his new master. He tells Setsuna that the unnatural weather is due to Demons from Makai, the Demon realm, and how Makai and the Real World are both in peril. To save both worlds, a Devil Child must gather the seven Messiah's Horns. Setsuna is reluctant to fulfill such momentous duties, being a mere elementary schooler, until Nightmare returns to fight. As for Zett, he sees explosions coming from his friends' apartment complex, and enthusiastically says "Game Start."

Chapter 2: Excessive Expectations
Setsuna has a faint flashback to his childhood, wherein he was beaten up by bullies and wanted to kill them. He has a brief memory of young Mirai, until Cool distracts him and welcomes him to Makai. The rift brought them to Ice Land, which Cool claims is Makai's sixth stratum. Standing before the Ice Gate, or the "Door to Hell" as Cool puts it, Setsuna learns that by using a Vinecom, he can load Demons into his Deviliser's Memory Bullets and summon them. The two march into the Ice Gate, declaring they will save both Makai and the Real World. In the distance, another Nightmare and his Demon gang discuss how their master, Hel, said there are three humans in Makai. Suddenly, their attention gets directed to Mirai, who has entered the Demons' realm carrying a Deviliser.

Setsuna and Cool arrive in Frost Town, to which Setsuna exclaims how Makai is a lot less grim than he had imagined. Taking a lunch break, Cool further explain his master's importance, in that only people with power like Setsuna's can use the Messiah's Horns―the one Tsubomi gave him is the Rainbow Horn. There are seven in total, which must be combined with the seven Messiah's Eyes to form the Norn Keys, items capable of bending reality to the wielder's will. However, the remaining horns are scattered, and Cool fears that the world is doomed if the Great Demon Lord acquires them. Setsuna feels overwhelmed at first, but realizes his missing father and Makai must be related somehow, seeing as he previously owned the horn. Cool tries asking more about his master's father, but Setsuna explains how his father left before he was born and thus never got to meet him.

Cool recognizes Veil and is equally as surprised. However, the kids notice they are surrounded by a crowd of Demons, who take them away to Hel's castle.

Dust the Yeti and Nekomata spy on the castle alongside an army of Demons, dubbed the Golden Bandits, announcing they will prove their potential to Hel. Meanwhile, the bandits' leader Diana, a Petit Frost, begins a countdown from 99.
In the castle's throne room, Ratatoskr presents Setsuna's Messiah's Horn and Mirai's Messiah's Eye to Hel, who orders they report it to the Great Demon Lord. Hel already possesses the Blue Horn and Blue Eye, combined into the Blue Key. He orders that Diana be executed at the crack of dusk, making Ratatoskr eager for a potential promotion in Hel's ranks. His accomplice Fenrir is also in the room, suspecting that the Golden Bandits are drawing near. Ratatoskr, however, is too distracted by delusions of grandeur to care.
Within the dungeon, Setsuna watches as a Garuda violently beats up Mirai, Cool, and Veil, screaming at him to let them go. Garuda then taunts Setsuna, proclaiming they will all soon meet their demise. After Garuda takes his leave, Setsuna notices Diana cheerily counting down and telling him to stop crying. The second Diana stops, a bomb detonates in an electrical unit, allowing Dust and the Golden Bandits to storm the castle. They slaughter several of Hel's underlings, to which Hel himself orders Ratatoskr and Fenrir to seize Diana. Fenrir turns away, disobeying Ratatoskr's orders and leaving the throne room.
As Setsuna and Diana become acquainted, they are broken out of their prison cell by Dust. Diana leads the Devil Children and their partners to a storage room where they retrieve their Devilisers, as well as a pair of Vinecoms. The Golden Bandits escape the dungeon, only to be met by Ratatoskr's army outside. Dust buys Diana and the Devil Children time by fighting the enemies, so they run off towards a snow mobile brought by Nekomata. She tells them to drive west to their hideout, and Setsuna promises to reunite with her there. Diana pilots the vehicle through the snow as a swarm of Nekhbets gain on them, to which Cool and Veil try striking them with magic. Suddenly, an energy wave cuts through the Nekhbets and hits the vehicle, revealed to have been cast by Fenrir. Setsuna is shocked to hear that Cool and Fenrir know each other, with Cool explaining that Fenrir is both a member and enemy of the Cerberus clan, as well as his foster parent.
Years ago, Fenrir led a legion of Garms against Cerberus Village to carry out the Great Demon Lord's unification of Makai, and mercilessly slaughtered everyone in the village. The elder Cerberus exclaimed their kin were chosen to be the partners of Devil Children, but was swiftly decapitated. While Fenrir continued his killing spree, a young Cool was taken away by his mother in an effort to hide. Unfortunately, as Cool's mother offered reassurance, she was killed in a stream of fire. Gazing upon his mother's charred corpse, Cool went insane and attacked Fenrir. His left eye was slashed during the fight, but he managed to win by unleashing a powerful fire spell that burnt Fenrir's arm. Impressed by his abilities, Fenrir believed Cool to have the potential to change the world, choosing to adopt him and defect from the Demon Lord's army.

Chapter 1: AD 2000.7 Early Winter

The story opens in Ice Land, where a nameless deliveryman flees a horde of Nightmare Demons while carrying a parcel. The man fears he is running out of time, exclaiming the parcel is meant for a Devil Child who will gather the "seven horns" and save the world.

Meanwhile in the Real World, the date is July 31, 2000, 2:06 PM. Setsuna Kai loses a kendo match against Mirai Kaname, sparking a heated argument between the two. Their friend Zett Takajō tells them to stop fighting, and reminds Setsuna that his mother Tsubomi is watching over him. Zett refers to Setsuna's pendant, a memento of his father which his mother gave to him as a child just days before she passed away. Since then, Setsuna has vowed to become strong.

As the three walk home, snow falls upon the city, which has been happening across the world since the day before. Setsuna wonders if it is the work of ghosts, but unbeknownst to the kids, the Nightmares from Ice Land secretly observe them. Setsuna retreats to his apartment to warm up, when suddenly, the deliveryman crashes through the wall, hands over the parcel, and succumbs to his injuries.

Cool gets injured by Nightmare's Zan spell, calling for his master to be brave and hone his powers. Motivated by wanting to become stronger, Setsuna opens a rift to Makai using his Messiah's Horn, while Cool fights back by casting Agi. With Nightmare defeated, Setsuna and Cool leap into the Makai rift. Mirai overhears the conflict and smirks, knowing that things are now in motion. As for Zett, he sees explosions coming from his friends' apartment complex, and enthusiastically says "Game Start."
