Garuda is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

In the Puranas, Garuda[a] is the vāhana (vehicle) of Vishnu and is usually depicted as part-man, part-bird. He is an enemy of the nāgas and seized the Devas' amṛta to save his mother from them.

Garuda is identified with the Rigvedic winged deity Garutmān.[b]

In Buddhism, there are several garudas.

Origin: India

Vishnu's half-man, half-bird mount. His mother became a slave after losing a bet with the Nagas. To save her, he stole Amrita from the gods to exchange it for her freedom. On his way back, he was intercepted by Vishnu, but Brahma intervened. Garuda became Vishnu's mount in exchange for immortality. Afterwards, he devised a plan to take his mother back and became a scourge of the Nagas. In Buddhism, Garuda is known as one of the 28 attendants of Senju-Kannon.

Translation: A gigantic divine bird that shines like a flame and appears in Indian mythology.

Also called the king of birds, he has the body of a human and the head, beak, wings, and claws of an eagle. He was born from an egg, but it took 1,000 years for the egg to hatch. His mother, Vinata, was enslaved by his mother's sister, Kadru, He is told that she would be released if he steals the Amrita, the holy water of immortality, and so he goes to take it. Then, after overcoming many obstacles, he successfully takes the Amrita by force. After that, he meets Vishnu and swears an oath of fealty to him, becoming Vishnu's vahana (divine vehicle). He also meets Indra, the god of thunder, and takes an oath of eternal friendship with him. Garuda brings the Amrita to the Nagas, the sons of Kadru. However, when Vinata is released, Indra took back the Amrita and brilliantly deceived the Naga.
