The Void, also called "the black scar", is a concept in Devil Survivor 2.

Profile

"Void" is a word used both for the process of a world's deletion and the result of the deletion of data.

An Administrator can initiate the deletion of a world, removing its data from the Akashic Record, akin to deleting a file from a computer. The beginning of a world's deletion is signaled by a destructive earthquake, which is usually capable of disrupting general telecommunications and damaging large buildings. Although exactly where deletion begins is unclear, the Void is visible in Japan within days, if not hours of the deletion starting. Deleted data becomes Void, which is the complete absence of anything. The Void is often said to be "moving" or "encroaching", though that describes the progress of a world's deletion rather than the Void itself, as there is apparent movement from the perspective of living beings in the world being deleted.

The Administrator is key to the continuation of the deletion process as they have control over it. Should it die, the process will be halted and the Void will "disappear". The Administrator also controls the speed at which the world is deleted, though increasing its speed is likely physically taxing, as shown when Arcturus became dormant when hastening deletion. The only thing shown to protect against the deletion of a region is the Dragon Stream, which can be manifested into large barriers to protect entire cities.

In gameplay, the Void acts like any space a character cannot move to or through.

Devil Survivor 2

Polaris, believing that humanity had reached a point of stagnation, began deleting the world and sent the Septentriones to destroy the towers powering the barriers formed by the Dragon Stream. However, she was willing to give humanity an opportunity to recreate the world according to the will of the species, so the Void was not utilized to its full potential.

The barriers protected Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya from deletion until the arrival of Mizar, whose self-replication proved to be too powerful to defeat by normal means, forcing the use of the Dragon Stream to devour Mizar at the cost of the barriers.

In the Liberator ending, due to the death of Polaris, the world's deletion is cancelled, causing areas formerly consumed by the Void to become oceans.

Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker

The deletion of the world began once more under Arcturus's administration, this time because humanity was seen as a threat. Because Arcturus actually wanted to destroy humanity, the Void encroached much faster than when it was used by Polaris.
