A Serpent God is a concept in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance.

Profile

The terms Serpent God and Horned God were inspired by Shigeo Komori analyzing comparative mythology and observing that in multiple cultures around the world, bull and snake gods have an adverse relationship where one dominates the other.[1]

In Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, the Serpent God refers to Tiamat and those of her linage that carry the divine aspect of the serpent. Once Tiamat ruled over creation until she was slain by Marduk, the Bull God, who then claimed the Throne of Creation and established the rule of the Horned Gods. In order to perpetuate his rule, Marduk placed a curse on the Throne that barred any Serpent Gods from claiming its power.[2] For eons the Horned Gods reigned over creation, leading to resentment among the Serpent Gods who sought to destroy the Throne and undo the Order that had ruled since Marduk fist took control.[3]

Eons prior to the events of the game, Tiamat ruled over a world of Chaos and birthed countless gods that carried the divine aspect of the serpent until the Babylonian god Murduk challenged and defeated her, claiming the Throne of Creation and establishing the rule of the Horned Gods.[4] For a time it was believed that the Throne could be claimed by any Nahobino until the Egyptian god Atum attempted to claim it, with the Throne rejecting him as Marduk had placed a curse on the Throne that barred any that carried the divine aspect of the serpent from claiming it's power. As a result Atum could not create a new world and relinquished the Winged Sun Crest and the power of Ra to Amun so that he may claim the Throne in his stead, making Amun the first Horned God to claim the Throne.[5]

The followers of the Serpent were oppressed by the continuous rule of the Horned Gods, building resentment and hostility. During the reign of the God of Law, they plotted to take revenge against the Horned Gods and return the world to the primordial Chaos that existed prior to Marduk's rule. To achieve this, Samael and his allies summoned the Qadištu from another world to enact their plans and resurrect Tiamat.[6][7][8]

Associated Deities

Notes

  • Though they are descendent of Tiamat, it is unclear if the Qadištu are considered Serpent Gods.

The snakes are worshipped by the people in some parts of the world as gods, but they also have legends of being defeated in other areas. I noticed that in some cases, the Bull God that is nicknamed as the Horned God is the one that defeats the Snake God or serves as its servant." Youtube. Published 02/21/2024. Retrieved 02/11/2025. He placed a curse upon the throne such that his reign would persist, even should his rule be challenged. And the system that governs this world allowed it.
