The Japanese name means that the sword has not had an inscription engraved on it yet, which is something done by Japanese swordsmiths.

The localized games' tendency to name the sword with the word "Nameless" or "Unnamed" may be due to the homophony of 無銘 mumei (uninscribed) with 無名 mumei (nameless).
