Profile
Origin
Ōmononushi, also known as Ōmononushi-no-Kami, Miwa-no-Ōkami, and Miwa (Dai)myōjin, is a kami in Japanese mythology associated with Mount Miwa, also known as Mount Mimoro, in Sakurai, Nara Prefecture. He appears in the imperial myth cycles recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE) and the Nihon Shoki (720 CE) in connection with the earthly deity Ōkuninushi, and is often treated as another name for or an aspect of Ōkuninushi’s spirit (mitama). His cult is centered on Ōmiwa Shrine at the foot of Mount Miwa, where the mountain itself serves as the shrine’s object of worship (shintai). He is also enshrined at a number of other shrines, including Ōsugi Shrine in Ibaraki Prefecture and Kotohira Shrine (Kotohira-gū) in Kagawa Prefecture, where he is identified with the deity Konpira Daigongen.
In the Kojiki narrative describing Ōkuninushi’s pacification and development of Ashihara no Nakatsukuni, the dwarf deity Sukunabikona appears and assists him in the formation of the land. After Sukunabikona departs for the “eternal land” (tokoyo no kuni), Ōkuninushi enshrines a divine presence on Mount Mimoro. In the Nihon Shoki, this presence explicitly identifies itself as the kushimitama (wondrous spirit) and sakimitama (fortunate spirit) of Ōnamuchi, another name for Ōkuninushi, and is named Ōmononushi. He is thus presented as the spirit of Ōkuninushi manifested in the mountain and worshiped as a distinct deity.
Both the Kojiki and the Nihon Shoki relate that during the reign of Emperor Sujin, a series of plagues afflicted the land. Following divination, the emperor received a revelation from Ōmononushi declaring that the calamities would cease only if he were properly worshiped. A priest named Ōtataneko was subsequently appointed to serve the deity at his shrine, after which the epidemic subsided. Ōtataneko is regarded as an ancestor of the priestly clans associated with the Miwa and Kamo lineages.
Ōmononushi’s principal place of worship is Ōmiwa Shrine, where Mount Miwa itself is revered as the kami’s sacred body. This form of mountain worship reflects some of the earliest expressions of Shinto and places Ōmononushi among the major deities of ancient Japan. Snakes are commonly associated with his cult, and local traditions describe a white serpent as a manifestation of the deity. Ritual offerings and ceremonies at Ōmiwa Shrine are traditionally linked to protection from disease and the restoration of communal well-being.

Tree roots extrude from Oumononushi's lower body, which may represent its connection to the Earth as a member of the Kunitsukami.[1]
