Profile

The Old Bamboo Comb is an item that Marie had on her and is the only clue she has about her identity and past. When seeing it, Daidara notes that it seems to be made of bamboo found in the Chugoku region of Japan. Kanji's Mother mentions that combs are associated with "separation" due to an old belief in Japan about combs being objects of power that can cause separation. As the protagonist thinks about on March 20th, in Japanese, a comb is a 櫛 Kushi. Due to this pronunciation, it is also associated with 苦死 Kushi meaning "suffering and death".

Trivia

• Though not used in the same manner, Marie having a bamboo comb comes from the tale of Izanagi in the Kojiki. When Izanagi went to Yomi to find Izanami, she asked him to wait while she asked the gods of Yomi if she could leave. Impatient, Izanagi took a tong from his bamboo comb and lit it on fire to use as a torch, revealing Izanami's true form as a rotting corpse.
