Doctor Nicholai is a minor character in Megami Ibunroku Persona. He's a foreign scientist working at SEBEC in the creation of the DEVA System.

Megami Ibunroku Persona

Nicholai only appears during the SEBEC Route of the game. He is first met with Takahisa Kandori in the Deva System Chamber in the underground of the SEBEC Building. He desperately tries to pursuade Kandori to stop the system and atone for his sins, stating he did not have to send Reiji Kido into Maki Sonomura's Idealized World, but he refuses and heads into the system.

Negotiations with Kandori having failed, Nicholai attempts as a last resort to take himself and Kandori down by making the Deva System reduce the two of them to their component atoms. The party wanting to avoid needless casualties, find two buttons linked to the system. A blue button which increases the system's output, and a red button that results in an emergency stop. If the protagonist decides to push the red button, an additional totem will be awarded when meeting his other-self in the Alaya Cavern. Regardless of the choice made, the system eventually stops, and Aki appears, sending the party and Kandori into the idealized world.

Nicholai is encountered again in Deva Yuga's Deva System Chamber. When the party arrives from the Haunted Mansion, they encounter the scientist brainwashed, repeating Kandori's nihilistic thoughts, just like everyone else in the dungeon. Upon Kandori's defeat and Maki running away, if the party heads back to the chamber, Nicholai will be back to his senses. He asks the party to rescue Maki, promising to adjust the system to help them rescue her and that he'll abide to the fate that awaits him.
