Dr. Hammerschmidt is a character in Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey.

Profile

Dr. Hammerschmidt was a German polymath specializing in physics who worked as a professor in the early 20th century. He is known for creating the Schwarzwelt and Information Dimension theories.[1][2] Hammerschmidt was able to create such unique theories due to his belief that an intelligent being created the universe which influenced his research.[3]

In 1933, Hammerschmidt posited that as humanity multiplied and continued to abuse the Earth's resources, the negative energy created by the species' prosperity would disrupt the Earth's metaphysical balance. This energy would be modeled off of human culture, giving it a will and intelligence. Ultimately, the coalescence of this energy would lead to the creation of a dimension he referred to as the "Schwarzwelt" (lit. dark world), which would mirror human civilization and house its own sentient beings. This is referred to as a corrective reaction, comparable to homeostatic regulation with the Schwarzwelt acting as an antibody to purify the Earth.[1][4][5] His theory also addressed technical aspects of the Schwarzwelt including its physical relation to Earth and how it would function with quantum tunnels.[6]

Due to how unconventional his theories were, his work was largely ignored by the academic community until the year 20XX when the Schwarzwelt appeared in Antarctica.[7]

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey

Throughout their journey in the Schwarzwelt, the Schwarzwelt Investigation Team use Dr. Hammerschmidt's theories as a reference in an attempt to escape.[4][6]

  1. ↑ 1.0 1.1 "Zelenin: "Schwarzwelt" is a term from a 1933 theory of Hammerschmidt's, a German professor. I'll explain... When human activity exceeds the world's natural capacity, and the balance of energy topples... A corrective reaction occurs. It's simplest to think of it as Earth's antibodies attacking humanity. Dr. Hammerschmidt's theory involved a prediction... He believed another dimension would appear, one where intelligent life dwelled. Now the Schwarzwelt has appeared, proving the existence of other dimensions... And the destruction of the drones implies the possibility of intelligent life inside... Or so some are saying. I'm still wondering if it's actually true..." Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS). Developed by Atlus. English.

  4. ↑ 4.0 4.1 "Zelenin: The intelligent life forms that Dr. Hammerschmidt predicted would inhabit the Schwarzwelt... Those are the very demons we are fighting now. The professor believed these life forms would appear as antipodes to human society. The more burden humans place on the Earth by multiplying and consuming natural resources... The more energy flows into the Schwarzwelt as a reaction. This energy has an intelligence and a will, modeled after human behavior. Of course, we can't rely solely on his theory for guidance. Dr. Hammerschmidt never predicted that we would have to fight the demons, as we must continue to do." Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS). Developed by Atlus. English.
  5. ↑ "Zelenin: So this sector shows signs of the human world, too. Looks like Dr. Hammerschmidt's theories were correct once more. He posited a causal relationship between the Schwarzwelt and human behavior. Excess prosperity would result in a negative reaction and self-destructive energy." 6. ↑ 6.0 6.1 "Arthur: Our analysis of the quantum tunnel indeed suggests that the end should be near. The structure of the quantum tunnel was extrapolated from the theory of the Schwarzwelt. Our data thus far has confirmed this theory. / Zelenin: You refer to Dr. Hammerschmidt's theory, yes? / Arthur: Correct, First Lieutenant Zelenin. Dr. Hammerschmidt predicted the presence of quantum tunnels within the Schwarzwelt. He also theorized the Vanishing Point at which the Schwarzwelt connects to our world. If this theory of the Vanishing Point is also correct... We should be able to find an egress to Earth." Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS). Developed by Atlus. English.
