G-Mode Corporation,[a] stylized as G-MODE, is a Japanese company specializing in video games for Java-compatible phones. On April 1, 2020, they announced they would be re-releasing their catalogue of video games for the Nintendo Switch and Steam under the "G-MODE Archives" series label.[2] They have also re-released phone games by third-parties, under the "G-Mode Archives+" label.
On July 14, 2022, G-Mode re-released Shinyaku Last Bible on modern platforms as part of their G-Mode Archives+ series. They have since re-released a handful of other Megami Tensei phone games.
History
G-Mode Co., Ltd. was founded in July 2000 and merged in March 2014 with ONE-UP Co., Ltd., a company established in 2006, which became G-Mode Corporation.[3][4]
G-Mode recognized the potential of mobile gaming and obtained the rights to Tetris in Japan in 2001. The company has continued to use this license as a key part of its mobile entertainment business in Japan.[5] In 2004, G-Mode acquired the back catalog of Data East Corporation.[6] In 2005, GungHo Online Entertainment invested in the company.[7] The company has since licensed Data East titles for release on platforms such as the Wii Virtual Console, GameTap, and mobile services. G-Mode launched an official Data East website in December 2008.
In 2010, it was announced that G-Mode would publish several Data East titles on the Zeebo console in Brazil and Mexico.[8] On March 1, 2012, after several years of support for the Wii Virtual Console, G-Mode delisted all of its PC Engine and TurboGrafx-16 titles from the service, while continuing to offer those originally released on Nintendo platforms.
