A fuguruma (文車) was a type of cart used to transport books and documents in medieval Japan. This demon is based on a type of yōkai from Toriyama Sekien's book Hyakki Tsurezure Bukuro known as the fuguruma-yōhi (文車妖妃), which takes the form of an old woman in tattered clothing which is born from the emotion and attachment in love letters in the fuguruma cart.[1]

A female yōkai that appears in archives, it possesses books people place into the archives but do not read. The fuguruma was a cart which transported documents to the imperial court and such. It also came to mean an aristocrat's archive. Words contain the soul of the person who uttered them, the kotodama. Additionally, words written in books are also filled with souls. Fuguruma is a yōkai that is drawn to those souls and possesses them. While not known for sure, it may be more likely to possess books written depicting stories of grudges and passion.
