Origin

Freyr (lit. "lord"), anglicized as Frey, is the Norse god of fertility and good harvests. He is one of the Vanir gods along with his father Njord and sister Freya. He is also known as Yngvi, and he was considered to be the ancestor of the Yngling clan, which is traditionally said to have ruled Sweden and Norway at different points in time.

In mythology Freyr fell in love with the jötunn Gerðr and gives up his sword, a magical weapon able to fight without someone directly wielding it, so that he may marry her. This choice is prophesied to ensure his death in Ragnarok as he cannot defeat Surt without it.
