Demons, also known as Devils,[a] are supernatural entities that appear throughout and are a core element of the Megami Tensei franchise. They serve as both malevolent forces as well as potential allies that can be befriended through Negotiation. They are often at the heart of major disasters that occur within the franchise's narratives, either being the cause of or otherwise related to them.
Demons in the Megami Tensei franchise do not just refer to conventional evil spirits or monsters, but also extends to numerous other figures and creatures across cultures, including deities, angels, historical and folk figures, urban legends, robots, and so on. In the context of the Megami Tensei franchise, Demon is used to refer to any entity that poses a potential threat to mankind.
Demons are often conversed with and summoned using portable computers or other technological devices, sometimes called a COMP in certain installments. Individuals capable of summoning Demons are referred to in the franchise as Demon Summoners or Devil Summoners.

The Demi-Fiend, Nanashi and the Nahobino, being inhuman, can summon Demons without a device.
Last Bible series
In the Last Bible series, Demons are referred to as Beasts[b] (Monsters in the Revelations: The Demon Slayer localization).[c] Beasts co-exist alongside humans in this series.

Persona series
In the Persona series, characters use Personas in battle instead of summoning Demons, though Personas are often the same Demons found in other games.
In Persona, Persona 2: Innocent Sin and Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, the party battles Demons. In Persona 3, Persona 4 and the Persona Q duology, the party battles Shadows. In Persona 5 and its spin-offs, the party fights Shadows that take the form of Demons.

Digital Devil Saga series
In the Digital Devil Saga series, humans infected by the Atma virus can turn into Demons; these humans make up both the party and many of the enemies they fight. The cost of Atma is hunger: should an infected individual go too long without feeding on other Demons, they risk losing their humanity and transforming into a Demon permanently.

- In Japanese, Demons allied with the protagonist are typically called 仲魔 nakama, a pun on 仲間 nakama (companion) and 魔 ma (demon).
