Trivia

  • While living as Kasumi, Sumire refers to the protagonist and his friends by their last names then after she has remembered that she is not Kasumi, she refers to most of them by their first names instead.
  • Sumire is the only confidant who will confess their love to the protagonist before being romanced.
  • Sumire was designed by Shigenori Soejima. Her Phantom Thief outfit was created by Azusa Shimada.[1]

Nomenclature

While her given name is spelled in hiragana, when spelled in kanji the word 菫 sumire means "violet". This is (as noted by Ann) the reason for her code name being the English word "Violet".

Sumire's name is a reference to Yoshizawa Ayame I (初代 芳澤 あやめ, Shodai Yoshizawa Ayame), a kabuki actor renowned for his talent as an onnagata, or specialist in female roles. Yoshizawa was so devoted to his craft that he thought it important to live life as a woman offstage as well, and his descendants continued to use the stage name. This dedication to a double life is similar to how Sumire chose to live all parts of her life as "Kasumi". Additionally, the given name the actor Yoshizawa used, Ayame (あやめ), is the hiragana spelling of 菖蒲, meaning "iris"— a purple flower like Sumire/"violet".
