Enemy symbols, sometimes referred to as demon symbols, are a recurring mechanic in the Megami Tensei franchise.
Profile
Enemy symbols are physical representations of Demons or Shadows that appear in dungeons or in the overworld. Oftentimes, touching or attacking an enemy symbol will trigger a battle.

Enemy symbols make their first appearance in the mainline Shin Megami Tensei series. If an enemy symbol spots the player, it will usually give chase. If the player presses the X button, they can slash in front of them with their sword, which can trigger a battle if the enemy is struck. Estoma Sword allows for this sword slash to instantly defeat enemies for a short period of time, though no experience points, Macca, or items will be given as a reward.

For the first time in the Megami Tensei franchise, the enemy symbols in the overworld directly represent which demons the player will encounter once battle begins. Some demons, such as Oyamatsumi, appear much larger than others. Demons that are of significantly lower level than the Nahobino will run away when approached.

Enemy symbols appear in Tartarus and the TV world.
If the player strikes an enemy symbol from behind, they will gain the advantage. Getting struck by the enemy first, however, will result in an Enemy Advantage. If the player strikes the enemy from the side or the front, the battle will proceed as usual.
