Zagan is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Zagan is a spirit in European demonology first attested as Zagon, a king in the the Livre des esperitz, which does not elaborate further upon him.[1]

He is later present as Zagam, the 47th spirit in Johann Weyer's Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, which draws from earlier sources. Zagan is a great king and president who appears like a bull with a griffin's wings. When he takes the form of a man, he can make a man ingenious and can transmute metals into the local coins, can change water into wine and vice versa, can change blood into oil and vice versa, and can change a fool into a wise man. He has 33 legions under his command.[2]

In the Ars Goetia section of The Lesser Key of Solomon, which is heavily based on the Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, Zagan is said to be the 60th spirit summoned by King Solomon of Israel. Due to an error, the Ars Goetia says he changes metals into corn rather than coins.[3]
