Origin
Wilbur Whateley is a character in H. P. Lovecraft's 1928 short story "The Dunwich Horror". He one of two sons of Yog-Sothoth, a cosmic deity, and Lavinia Whateley.
Within the story, Wilbur Whateley was born on 2nd February, 1913, in Dunwich, Massachusetts, at 5 AM. He would grow unnaturally quickly, looking 15 years old by the time he was 4 and quickly learning to study arcane texts. One such text to take his fancy was the Necronomicon owned by his grandfather, specifically the English translation by Dr. Dee. He is described as a dark, gaunt, goat-like man, and constantly spoke in eye dialect. However, he would also be described as having "almost Latin eyes", which would give him an air of intelligence to all he met. Growing up, Whateley would correspond with academic institutions, asking feverish questions about many an occult text.[1]
Eventually, after his father passed, Whateley would get permission to view the Latin translation of the Necronomicon, wherein he would turn to page 751 to engage in comparative translation between it and his English version. The passage translated would be an incantation to summon Yog-Sothoth, which unnerved Dr. Henry Armitage, who was supervising him. Denied the request to take the text home with him, Whateley would suddenly be denied entry into any institution to view their versions of the Necronomicon, forcing him back to the campus to steal the book. However, due to his gun failing to fire, he would die. It was here that it was revealed Whateley was far from human: Without any human-like skeleton, but with eyes on his hips and a pungent odor emanating from his body, he would dissolve into nothing post-mortem. His twin brother, the Dunwich Horror itself, would soon face the the same fate.[1]
Design
Waitry appears as a man with a large head. His goatee and palid skin match his description in the original text, but his skin colour is made a zombie-like green instead. He holds a cube and wine glass, which are generally unrelated to the text.
