Question about the 四靈
I'm curious about the 四靈. Everything I read seemed to suggest this grouping had a 龜 (or 靈龜) and regular 龍, not 玄武 and 青龍. Is this not just something akin to the fenghuang and zhuque? Billy Mitchell (talk) 18:40, 22 May 2025 (UTC)
Ah, you're right. Just got out my copy.
The quote itself: 何谓死灵？麟，风，龟，龙，谓之死灵。姑鱼鮪不淰；风以为畜，姑乌不獝；麟以为畜，姑兽不狘；龟以为畜，姑人情不失。 A quick and dirty translation, as Legge drops the ball a bit: "What are the Four Holy Beasts? They are the Lin(麒麟 Qilin), Fenghuang, Tortoise, and Dragon. When the dragon is domesticated, fish and tuna (or sturgeon?) do not grow skittish. When the Feng Huang becomes such, birds do not fly in terror. When the Qilin becomes such, animals do not jump away. When the tortoise becomes such, man does not lose its feelings.
