Template:Cite Web
Purpose
Citation template used to cite references from web sources, including web pages, online documents and files, videos, podcasts, blogs, and social media posts.
Cite Web is intended for general web source citations. Some specific citation templates have their own web source parameters as needed (example: for when a magazine article is hosted on the publisher's website). Rather than use Cite Web, it is preferable to use a specific template that best fits the citation's scope:
- Cite Magazine
- Cite Manual (for when a game manual is officially hosted online)
- Cite Journal
Usage
Citation templates must be enclosed in <ref></ref> tags in order to be properly displayed and sorted. Pages will also need a ==References== section with Template:Reflist. This section must be placed near the bottom of the page, before any navigation templates and categories. For more information on citing references and using citation templates, consult the citations guidelines.
Citation templates include several parameters for citing certain kinds of information pertaining to the source. Some parameters may be required and must be filled, while others may only be highly recommended or are optional.

| quote | The quoted text or transcription from the web source. In most cases, this parameter should be used unless the web source has no text or transcription to cite, such as an image file.

| url | The direct URL to the web source and its title or description. This must be formatted as an external link. For example: [https://www.google.com/ Google]

| archive | The direct URL to an archive of the web source, such as via the Internet Archive. An archive ensures that if any information on the original web source is changed or lost, then it can still be accessed and cross-referenced. This should also be formatted as an external link. In the event that the original web source has since been lost, it is recommended to still preserve the original URL in the url parameter. If the original URL cannot be determined, add just the archived URL to the url parameter instead.
