Template:Cite Book

Purpose

Citation template used to cite references from books, including manga and comics, guidebooks, reference works, and most other publications.

This citation template should not be used for video game manuals, magazines, or articles from an academic journal. For citing these, please use the following:

Usage

Citation templates must be enclosed in <ref></ref> tags in order to be properly displayed and sorted. Pages will also need a ==References== section with Template:Reflist. This section must be placed near the bottom of the page, before any navigation templates and categories. For more information on citing references and using citation templates, consult the citations guidelines.

Citation templates include several parameters for citing certain kinds of information pertaining to the source. Some parameters may be required and must be filled, while others may only be highly recommended or are optional.

Parameter	Description	Function
quote	The quoted text from the book. For spoken dialogue in a manga or comic, include the bolded name of the subject who is speaking or displaying the quoted text, formatted as '''Subject:''' Quote. The subject's name should be attributed to the name or title given in the book. If the subject is not explicitly named anywhere, go with an appropriate descriptor (such as Man, Woman, Sign, etc). When quoting two or more subjects, such as in a brief conversation, separate their lines with a dash /. For example: '''Subject A:''' Quote. / '''Subject B:''' Quote. This parameter should also be used when citing Japanese or non-English text. If a translation of the quote is available, add it to the translquote parameter.	Required when citing specific text; optional only when citing a description or the whole book as a general reference
translquote	If the quoted text has been translated, use this parameter. Use the same formatting style defined for quote.	Optional; use for translations
des	A description of the page, if necessary. This parameter should be used when citing a printed chart, illustration, or anything else that has little to no text or requires additional context.	Optional
chapter	The chapter title the citation is sourced from, if any.	Optional
title	The title of the book. If the book is related to the Megami Tensei franchise, link to the book using Template:Link and the book's media abbreviation. For books not related to the Megami Tensei franchise (for example: a dictionary about supernatural entities), an external link is not required, but can be made using Template:Wp if there is a Wikipedia page. If the book has a digital object identifier (DOI), a link can be added with the doi parameter instead.	Required
passage	The standardized reference for lines, etc. for pre-printing press works such as Greco-Roman classics (if such a system exists for the work in question).	Optional
publyear	The year of publication. Do not include for works from before the printing press (such as Greco-Roman classics) unless citing a specific printed edition thereof.	Optional
Author	The author(s) of the book.	Optional
publisher	The publisher of the book.	Optional
lang	The language the book is in. This parameter should be used when citing non-English publications.	Optional
volume	The book's volume number, if part of a series of volumes.	Optional
edition	The book's edition.	Optional
page	The page(s) the citation is sourced from. Format this as p. 112 for a single page, or pp. 112-113 for multiple pages. This parameter is optional when citing a whole book as a general reference. Otherwise, this parameter must be used when citing specific pages.	Required when citing specific pages
transl	The source of the text's translation. This parameter must be used if the quoted text is sourced from a fan translation. Add just the name of the translator or group, and link to their page if there is one. For example: [[Aeon Genesis]], [[Gouma-Den Scanlations]].	Required when citing from a fan translation; optional otherwise
isbn	The book's 13-digit International Standard Book Number (ISBN).	Optional
doi	Digital object identifier for the book (if applicable). Automatically links to the book if provided.	Optional

General references

Put in a bulleted list above Template:Reflist. Set the id field in the template to the author's surname and the year of publishing, e.g. "Smith 2000". Then use Template:Sfn for your actual page number citations.
