To use this page type's boilerplate, select "Origin" under "Content".
Category:Origins in Megami Tensei is included in the boilerplate as a placeholder category; this should be replaced by specific subcategories where possible, such as Category:Demons from Japanese Culture or Category:Demons from Shinto as per the category guidelines. The Origins in Megami Tensei category is only intended to list the specific subcategories.
| Section | Explanation | |
|---|---|---|
| Background | This section should serve as a brief overview of the origin page's topic, ranging from one to ten paragraphs. Background sections should not become exhaustive descriptions of a particular origin and should be used to introduce unfamiliar readers to necessary information to understand what the origin is.
| |
| Usage in Megami Tensei | This section covers how the Megami Tensei franchise broadly uses the origin as inspiration for various gameplay and story elements, divided into six subsections. The subsections Characters and Miscellaneous are exclusive rather than inclusive and have stricter requirements for inclusion. For inclusive subsections, it is enough to simply reference the origin. | |
| Characters | Characters that are intended to be viewed as the same character as in the origin. Victor from Devil Summoner is intended to be the same figure as Victor Frankenstein from Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein, so he belongs in this section. Only characters that are an existing figure should be placed here. Being named after a figure, referencing a trait of a figure, or being heavily inspired by a figure instead belong in Miscellaneous. Two characters who have the same origin but are different individuals should be listed separately. | |
| Demons | Demons, Personas, Guardians, Atma Avatars, etc. that are related to or inspired by the origin. | |
| Items | Items of nearly any kind (consumables, key items, equipment, etc.) that are related to or inspired by the origin. Skill-teaching items are not included if they share a name with the taught skill; instead, the skill alone should be listed in the Skills subsection. | |
| Locations | Locations that are inspired by the origin, but not locations that are named after the origin. The latter should be placed in miscellaneous. | |
| Skills | Skills that are named after or inspired by the origin. | |
| Miscellaneous | Major elements of Megami Tensei titles that are intentional references to the origin that do not fit elsewhere. For example, Igor is named after the figure from Frankenstein, but unlike Victor, he is an original character and has nothing to do with the character of the same name; similarly, the karaoke club Mandragora in Persona 3 belongs here because it is merely named after Mandrake and is not directly inspired by any mythical location. Minor elements, such as mentioning Achilles when using the phrase "Achilles' Heel," would not belong here. Additionally, this section is superceded by every other section; therefore, it should only be used if no other section is appropriate. This means, for example, that readable items in the Persona series should be placed in Items if they can be added to the player inventory. | |
| Plot Elements in Megami Tensei | This section covers when an origin is directly based into the story of an entry in the Megami Tensei franchise. For example, the plot of Persona 3 incorporates elements which derive from Greco-Roman religion and society; these elements should be covered in this section. Only elements relevant to the origin should be mentioned and this section should not be used as a plot summary; rather, it should remain focused on informing readers of how and where the Megami Tensei franchise is using its inspirations in writing.
| |
| Trivia | Like most pages, origin pages allow for trivia. However, it should be noted that this section is not to be used for "fun facts" about the origin, i.e. a page on Chinese culture does not need to describe the state of China's economy, no matter how interesting it may be. Rather, this section should be used for interesting trivia related to the origin and Megami Tensei. For example, if an origin was incorrectly ascribed to the wrong region or if Megami Tensei typically conflates two distinct origins.

Multiple Origins
Some elements can be categorized into multiple origins. Generally, this should be reserved only for list items that are definitively in multiple unrelated categories, such as Alice simultaneously referencing English literature and being an original creation. List items that are primarily from one origin but may take an element from a reinterpretation (such as Mara taking their design from a Japanese pun) should not be included, but may qualify for trivia depending on the significance.
Language-Specific Origins
Some references may only exist in certain languages; for example, the skill Freikugel references Der Freischütz in some languages, but not in the original Japanese text. These instances, so long as they exist in official Megami Tensei media and not solely in fan translations, should be included in the appropriate sections as needed. However, Template:Exp should be utilized to clarify the languages that the reference exists in. Additionally, in such cases, the First Appearance field should list the first title where the subject was translated to the reference, not the first title that the subject appeared in, unless they are identical.
Sub-origins
Some subjects may belong to a subcategory of the origin, such as Alice having an origin in English literature, which is a subcategory of both English culture and pop culture. These subjects should only be on the origin page that matches the categories on the subject's dedicated article. However, origin pages should provide a link to any parent pages or child pages through the use of Template:Related.
