Origin

Tisiphone is one of the Furiae, daughters of Nox (the night) in Virgil's Aeneid. She also appears in the writings of Tibullus, Ovid, and Statius.

While more prominent in and first known from Roman sources, Tisiphone is mentioned among the Erinyes in Greek sources by the 2nd century AD, including in Apollodorus's Bibliotheca and in Harpocration's Lexicon of the Ten Orators. As neither author has any indication of using the Aeneid as a source, it is likely the name originated in Greek tradition in a source that does not survive.
