The game

A group of high schoolers are playing the "Persona" game in an abandoned room of St. Hermelin High School. The game involves 4 participants in the corner of a room, beckoning "Persona" to come before going to the next person in a circle, until each participant has moved once. The jokester Hidehiko Uesugi convinced his friends to participate, so the troublemaker Masao Inaba alongside the blunt Yuka Ayase begrudgingly agrees to play along, though the formal Eriko Kirishima is much more enthusiastic. Meanwhile, the logical Kei Nanjo, the mature Yukino Mayuzumi and the quiet protagonist stand and watch. Masao asks the protagonist to bet on whether or not the "Persona" game will work. At first, it looks like nothing happened, but to the shock of everyone, a translucent little girl is in the room, before Yukino, Nanjo, Masao and the protagonist gets struck by lightning. Unconscious, a butterfly appears to the pierced boy, before a man wearing a mask and a long white coat summons the protagonist. He introduces himself as Philemon, and upon the protagonist stating his name, grants him the power of summonning a reflection of their personalities in the form of Personas. Waking up at the nurse's office, the protagonist is greeted by his worried homeroom teacher Saeko Takami, and tells him and his friends to go at the hospital in case they got hurt while falling. The four of them decide to use this occasion to visit their bed-ridden friend Maki Sonomura, who has been stuck the hospital for a year. Nanjo is accosted by his butler Yamaoka, but Nanjo calls him off, embarrassed by his presence.

The awakening

Arriving at the hospital, Nanjo proposes to go visit Maki right away at room 302, which they do. After a bit of small talk, Maki writhes in pain, and the group rushes to get a doctor. While they're waiting, the hospital begins to shake heavily. Worried for Maki, Masao runs into the third floor, but the door to it leads to a wall. The four of them hear screams at the second floor lobby, and they sprint towards the danger. They find a gruesome scene: Yamaoka has been attacked by zombies while saving a nurse. As the undead attack the teenagers, they awaken to their Persona, allowing them to fiend off the enemies. Yamaoka tells his dying words to a distraught Nanjo, and the four friends venture into the hospital, defeating supernatural creatures as they try to escape.
