Phaniel is a Demon in Giten Megami Tensei: Tokyo Revelation.

Origin

Phanuel[a] (from Hebrew for "face of God") is an angel in the Book of Enoch, listed as one of four angels along with Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel. The name appears to have been used interchangeably with Uriel and Sariel.[1] Phanuel[b] also appears in the Slavonic version of the post-Second Temple Jewish book known as 3 Baruch or the Greek-Slavonic Apocalypse of Baruch.[2] He is described as an angel of the powers[c] and appears as interpreter of the revelations.[2] The surviving Greek version instead has "Phamael"; while Kulik (2010) believes Phanuel to be the correct name and Phamael to be a corruption thereof, James (1897) posited that Phamael may be a corruption of Ramael, who appears in 2 Baruch (the Syriac Apocalypse of Baruch) in a similar role.[2]

The name Phanuel itself is likely derived from the hill Jacob wrestled God on, which is called both Peniel[d] and Penuel[e] (latinized as Phaniel and Phanuel). This incident is interpreted in Jewish exegesis as Jacob wrestling an angel of God rather than God directly, and some texts give the name Uriel or Sariel to this angel. It is not unlikely then that the name Phanuel might have been associated with this angel.[4]

Phaniel is mentioned briefly as an angel by Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, who links it with the place name when discussing where angel names come from.[5]

Phaniel is first encountered by Ayato Katsuragi at Ochanomizu Shelter, Phaniel asks Katsuragi if he can help her defeat the demon Aim who has been setting the shelter on fire and killing its citizens, depending on what Katsuragi says the shelter can either be saved or destroyed.
