Outfits are a recurring piece of equipment in the Megami Tensei franchise.
Overview
Outfits, also known as Clothes
Persona 4 Golden
and CostumesPersona 4: Dancing All Night
, are a type of purely cosmetic equipment that is equipped separately from stat-boosting armor. While Persona 3 had some armor that changed appearance, it was tied to the armor and its stats, and a character's appearance would change back when equipping a different armor. Outfits were introduced starting in Persona 4 Golden, keeping armor and appearance separate.
Over the course of the games, characters naturally change what they wear from school uniforms to casual wear to swimsuits. By equipping an outfit, the player can customize their characters and override a character's default appearance, such as making a character wear summer clothes during winter. These changes do not affect how characters look during the main story and will only show up in dungeons, combat-related areas, and in battles.
Some outfits are unlocked automatically (such as gaining summer outfits once it turns summer on the calendar), others are gained through completing quests, and others are only available through paid DLC. Aside from any story related clothing, common outfits include Christmas and Halloween-themed costumes, maid and butler attire, Velvet Room-inspired clothes, and uniforms from other schools in the Persona series.
