The Protagonist, nicknamed Newbie, is a playable character in Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Dx2. Their gender is determined by the player at the beginning of the game.
The Protagonist is not given a default name in the game. The player's chosen display name is used as the Protagonist's code name in several in-game menus.
Profile
The protagonist is a resident of Akihabara, Tokyo. Their personality and Alignment are determined by dialogue options, with Law-aligned choices being more friendly and Chaos-aligned choices being more impulsive. Regardless of Alignment, they develop good relationships with the Liberators, who see them as a reliable Downloader.
The male protagonist is a young, black-haired man who wears a red flannel shirt, a white sleeveless jacket, black pants and red shoes. The female protagonist is a young, black-haired woman who wears a blue flannel dress, a pink hoodie and blue shoes.
The Alter-World version of the protagonist is significantly colder, frequently bickers with their partner Pixie, and suffers from strong feelings of guilt and regret. Despite this, they still care about their friends to the point of putting themselves in danger for their sake.
The male Alter-World protagonist wears a gray shirt, white and black jacket, black ripped pants and black shoes. The female Alter-World protagonist wears a black and gray shirt, a white jacket, black shorts and black boots.
Gameplay
Newbie does not have a set name nor gender. Instead, both of these characteristics are decided upon by the player at the beginning of the game, and can be changed at any time. Newbie cannot be given a surname, and their forename is limited to eight characters. The two gender options for Newbie - male and female - are for cosmetic purposes only, and do not affect the story.

The Alter-World protagonist behaves like a Demon in battle instead of as a Dx2, and no Dx2 abilities can be used in the Alter-World. The protagonist's party is limited to themselves and three Demons, where the protagonist always moves first. Their maximum MP is 15 instead of 10, and their base stats are determined by one of six styles. Their other characteristics, such as skills and resistances, are determined by their equipped Armaments.

Game Appearances
Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Dx2
The protagonist downloads a mysterious "mobile game" after seeing it advertised online, with the hopes that it could bring some action to their dull, isolated existence. After opening the "game", they are confronted by Einherjar, who claims to have been waiting for someone like them to download the game. He refers to the protagonist as "the chosen one", and introduces them to the world of Demons and devil downloading. Einherjar then recruits the protagonist into the Tokyo Branch of the Liberators, and directs them to the nearest Liberator hideout. There, the protagonist is introduced to the other members of the Tokyo branch, and nicknamed "Newbie" by Taro Fuse. This nickname later becomes their official code name.
Their Limit Break story takes place on one night, where Himika tells them that they are destined to fight the other Liberators to the death, as the price for using the power of Demons. They fight Rika Ryuzouji, Shiang Sun, Ririn Ueda, Jeng Yun Tsai, Gakuto Inoue and Shiori Koden, each of them falling to the protagonist. Their final opponent is Taro Fuse, who says that this ritual is the one that decides who becomes the leader of the Japanese branch of the Liberators, and that he survived it many times. He is also defeated, at which point Himika appears to complete the ritual and bless the protagonist with power. Then, all of the Liberators appear, revealing that the whole thing was an act, though Himika still says that the protagonist may have "awakened" something within them.
