For the mechanic referred to as Mutation in the Last Bible series, see Fusion Accident.

Mutation is a recurring mechanic in Persona 2: Innocent Sin and Persona 2: Eternal Punishment.

Overview

A Mutation has a chance of occurring when a battle is finished via the use of a Fusion Spell. The odds of it happening are influenced by the Affinity between the party members participating in the Fusion Spell and their Personas.

There are multiple possible Mutation effects, but they all serve to strengthen the Persona in one way or another.

Mechanics by Game

Persona 2: Innocent Sin

There are four possible Mutation results.

Increased Stats: The Persona will have all of its stats increased by +2. This may happen at any Rank and continue happening until all of the Persona's stats are maxed.
Two Ranks Up: The Persona's Rank will increase by +2. This may only happen up until Rank 6. Since the max Rank is 8, Personas of Rank 7 or 8 cannot gain two Ranks at once.
Skill Learned: Every Persona in the game has a hidden skill that may only be learned via Mutation. This may only happen on Rank 6 onward.
Persona can Change Forms: The Persona may be taken to the Velvet Room to be morphed into a completely new Persona. The Persona will return to Rank 1 and cannot be currently equipped in order to go through this change.

Most Personas will always gain the ability of morphing into a specific Persona of a Minor Arcana, but some of them have a chance of morphing into a stronger Persona of the same Arcana as themselves, and all Personas have a small chance of a "failure" mutation into the Persona Poltergeist.

The result of the transformation is decided at the moment the Mutation is triggered and can be seen in the Velvet Room, so if a Persona gains the ability of turning into Poltergeist, there is no chance of changing that other than deleting that Persona, re-summoning it, and gaining the morphing ability again.

Having a Persona in the player's possession prevents any other Persona from gaining the ability or morphing into it, so having a Poltergeist in the player's possession will prevent any Persona into gaining the ability of morphing into Poltergeist, but this won't affect any Persona that unlocked the ability of turning into Poltergeist beforehand.

Persona 2: Eternal Punishment

The mechanics are mostly unchanged from Innocent Sin with the exception of a new type of Mutation, bringing the number of total results to five.

The new Mutation effect will unlock the Persona's Unknown Ability, an ability that has a chance of activating when the user is in low health, receives a massive amount of damage at once, or dies. The Unknown Ability may damage or kill all enemies, heal or buff the user, revive the user, or make the user temporarily reflect any attack.
