Muninn is one of Odin's ravens, along with Huginn, who act as his messengers and scouts, sent into the world to observe what is happening and report back to him. The meaning of Muninn's name is not fully agreed upon: the most widely accepted interpretation is the Old Norse word for "memory", though "thought" has also been proposed, despite it being the meaning of Huginn's name. Due to their close connection with Odin, he was given the epithet "The Raven God".

In the Poetic Edda, Odin states that he worries that his ravens may not return from their daily flights, and specifically claims that, of his two ravens, he fears for the safety of Muninn more. In the Prose Edda, it is stated that Muninn flies with Huginn across the world from morning until night, when they return to Odin and recount all they have seen and heard.
