The Merlion is the official mascot of Singapore, appearing as a mythological creature with the lower half of a fish and the upper half of a lion. The symbol of a seafaring lion is meant to connect with Singapore's own name, which comes from Singapura (itself believed to come from the Sanskrit सिंहपुरsiṃhapura), meaning "lion city." The lower fish half of the creature is likewise meant to symbolize Singapore's history as both a nation of fishermen and an island nation.[1] Designed by Alec Fraser-Bunner in 1964, it is typically used as the national symbol of Singapore for the purposes of tourism, advertisement, and sports. Several prominent statues of the creature appear throughout the country, many of which are capable of spewing water.
