Role (Persona 5: The Phantom X)

Roles are a mechanic in Persona 5: The Phantom X.

Overview

Every playable character (Phantom Thieves and Phantom Idols) and Persona in the game is assigned a role, which indicates the general function and purpose they are designed to be used for in battle. The protagonist's role is determined by which Persona he currently has equipped. Characters with distinct variant forms may have differing roles than usual, e.g. Riko Tanemura/Wind and her Persona Chiyome are classed as an Elucidator, but her "Tempest" form makes them a Strategist. Additionally, the "Virtuoso" role, which is exclusive to the Twin Wardens, gives them a different effective role in battle depending on which combination of masks were chosen.

Roles are also relevant for categorizing characters in certain challenges or mechanics such as Trial of Thorns or Tasks, which may limit which roles can be used or provide those characters certain special effects.

Role	Description
Assassin	Skilled in attacks that can target a single enemy.
Sweeper	Skilled in attacks that can target multiple enemies.
Medic	Can heal allies and provide resilience to the team.
Guardian	Skilled at protecting teammates and increasing the team's survivability.
Strategist	Provides buffs to allies and can increase the team's combat power.
Saboteur	Gain an advantage in combat by inflicting debuffs on enemies.
Elucidator	Use Support skills on the field without directly participating in combat.
Virtuoso	They excel at using a myriad of tactics, giving an advantage over various foes.
