Nomenclature

Takashi Hanya's surname is composed of the character 反, meaning "reverse" or "against", and the character 谷 meaning "valley". His given name is composed of the characters 孝, meaning "filial piety", and 志, meaning "will" or "intention".

Takashi Hanya's nickname, "Hannya", is a reference to the Hannya mask (Japanese: 般若面, romanized hannyamen), a Noh mask depicting a demoness and used as a shorthand to describe a terrifying and jealous person or their facial expression.

Takashi Hanya is named and modeled after Takashi Hanya, a member of Atlus's marketing division at the time, though the real Hanya's surname is spelled differently as 半谷.
