Profile

Origin

The Gigantes,[a] usually referred to as "Giants" in English, were a race of beings with great strength and hubris in Greek mythology. According to Hesiod, they were born from the blood spilled onto the earth (Gaia) when Uranus was castrated by Cronus. The Gigantes battled the Olympian gods in what is known as the Gigantomachy. By the Roman period, the Gigantes were often conflated with the Titans, another group which fought the Olympian gods.

The modern English words "giant" and "gigantic" are derived from the name of the Gigantes; however, the Gigantes were not necessarily described as large in size until later periods of time. Additionally, they were sometimes portrayed in later times (circa 4th century BC and later) as having serpents for feet or legs, which is not present in earlier sources.
