The Erinyes,[a] also known as the Eumenides[b] and usually referred to in English as the Furies, are a group of deities who were believed by the ancient Greeks to take vengeance upon those who broke oaths. According to Hesiod's Theogony, the Erinyes were born from the blood spilled onto the earth (Gaia) when Uranus was castrated by Cronus. Aeschylus instead names their mother as Nyx.
In Aeschylus's Eumenides (part of the Oresteia), the Erinyes pursue Orestes, as he has killed his mother Clytemnestra; however, he is protected by Apollo. In a trial for Orestes presided over by Pallas Athena, he is judged to live, and the Erinyes reluctantly accept the decision after persuasion from Athena.
The Romans adapted the Erinyes as the Furiae.
