Category:Demons from Gnosticism

Jump to navigation Jump to search

This category is for Demons originating from Gnosticism. Gnosticism (from the Greek word for "knowledge") is the conventional grouping of a number of early Christian sects with similar theology and cosmology to one another that differed significantly from the so-called "proto-orthodox" beliefs that would be formalized at the ecumenical councils.

Gnostic beliefs have a significant influence from Platonic ideas and classically involve a dualistic divide between the material and the spiritual; the material world is thought of as corrupt and created by a false god (called different names by different groups) distinct from the higher, unknowable good God. Salvation (defined as freedom from the material world) can be achieved through attaining gnosis (knowledge).

"Gnostic" may also be used to describe certain non-Christian groups such as Mandaeans and Manichaeans, which similarly have dualist beliefs of the divide between the material and the spiritual.
