The Brocken specter[a] is an optical phenomenon that can be seen at the peak of the Brocken mountain (now located in Saxony-Anhalt) on a foggy day: the observer's shadow cast upon the fog will appear to be a large shadowy figure in the distance. This phenomenon was first described by German pastor and natural scientist Johann Silberschlag in 1780.
