Nomenclature

Qadištu is a feminine plural noun derived from the Semitic triconsonantal root q-d-š, meaning "holy". Qadištu, along with its Hebrew cognate which occurs in the Bible, has traditionally been interpreted as meaning "temple prostitutes", though that interpretation is not favored in current scholarship.
