Long ago, a terrifying Demon appeared in Valhalla and attempted to conquer it, until a Devil Child known as the "Messiah of Legend" fought back, honing the power of four Secret Stones to seal the Demon's soul within the Messiah Riser, the ultimate Deviliser.

In the present, a revived Imperial Army lays siege to Valhalla in search of the Messiah Riser, with plans to break its seal and unleash the ancient Demon. Ami Kashihara beckons Jin, Akira, and Rena back to Valhalla, wherein they all learn of the Messiah Riser and the four Secret Stones. A new adventure spanning across Valhalla and Makai begins, as the Devil Children set off to find the Secret Stones in order to stop the Imperial Army and restore peace to the world.

Gameplay

Akira using Call to summon Jack-o'-Lantern, costing 6 of his 15 available Energy Points.

Unlike the turn-based battles in previous entries, combat in Messiah Riser takes place in real time. The player clears a stage upon fulfilling the prompt given to them at the start of a battle, be it defeating all enemies on the field or walking to a certain spot. A battle will result in a loss if Rand/Gale is defeated, as they carry Jin/Akira.

Instead of explorable environments, the world is segmented into different stages, which the player can move between across linear paths. While on the world map, pressing the A button opens a menu that allows the player to move between conquered areas, or manage their Demon roster. If stopped at a town, the option to visit the Mysterious Manor (あやしい館 Ayashī Yakata) becomes available, in which Demons may be fused together.

Demon units are loaded into the Deviliser's Deck (デッキ Dekki), the maximum being 30. Rather than having an array of skills that can be inherited through fusion, each unit has one unique spell that may be unleashed in battle. Units also fall into different type categories: Attack Types (こうげきタイプ Kōgeki Taipu) are more efficient in physical damage, Magic Types (こうげきタイプ Kōgeki Taipu) have high spellcasting power, Support Types (ほじょタイプ Hojo Taipu) specialize in using ailment and buff/debuff spells, and Recovery Types (かいふくタイプ Kaifuku Taipu) possess strong HP and MP recovery.

Gale, Kali, Otohime, and Jack-o'-Lantern versus Yuki-onna.

During battles, the player issues commands to units via a cursor. Pressing A on a unit (or L/R to shuffle between units) displays its statistical information, as well as four commands: Move (いどう Idō) directs the unit to a point on the map selected by the cursor, Attack (こうげき Kōgeki) makes the unit fight enemies directly, Magic (まほう Mahō) unleashes the unit's specific spell, and Return (もどす Modosu) stores the unit back in the player's Deck. Rand and Gale have Call (コール Kōru) instead of Return, in which Jin/Akira summons units from the Deck. The Move command can be issued simultaneously by holding A and dragging the cursor over multiple units.

Ally units are summoned by consuming Energy Points (エナジーポイント Enajī Pointo), of which the player starts with 15, though more can be gained by directing Rand/Gale to glowing blue orbs on the field. Summoning will rack up Call Points (コールポイント Kōru Pointo), a value determining how many units can be active at once, and varies between stages. The Return command replenishes any Energy Points or Call Points that were used for a unit's summoning. Also, summoned units will appear as eggs and take a moment to hatch.

When an enemy is defeated, its Soul (たましい Tamashī) remains on the field for a limited amount of time. Using the Move command, an ally unit may be directed to the Soul to initiate negotiation and potentially recruit that enemy. Negotiations are more successful if the unit and Soul have the same attribute.
