Akechi is the illigitemate child of Masayoshi Shido and a prostitue, who was forced to commit suicide after birthing a child out of wedlock. Two years before the start of the game, he became a Wild Card Persona user and, as a result, gained access to the Metaverse. In a ploy to publicly expose and humiliate his father for ruining his life, Akechi became closer with him, with plans to backstab him later down the line. He offered his services as a metaverse user to him, which Shido made use of by having Akechi kill all those standing in his way of climbing the political ladder. One of Akechi's first victims was Wakaba Isshiki, whose research on cognitive psience would prove useful for Shido. Later on, Akechi would cause mental shutdowns in subway drivers in order to cause accidents, which Shido would then make use of in his political campaigns, framing the traffic department as incompetent.
Akechi first comes into contact with the Phantom Thieves during his appearance on "Good Morning Japan". He comments on a statement made by Morgana about pancakes, which first sets the Phantom Thieves off in knowing that Akechi has Metaverse powers allowing him to hear Morgana.
