Reason is a central concept in Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne. After The Conception, the new structure of the world must be decided. In order to achieve this, those who can manifest a Reason must fight to make their vision a reality. One's Reason is a strong philosophical vision of what the new world should be, similar to alignments.

To bring a reason into fruition, one needs a large amount of Magatsuhi energy to summon a Demonic Sponsor. They must then ascend the Tower of Kagutsuchi. Once a Reason is chosen, the demon-infested intermediary Vortex World will be replaced with the true next universe.

Manikins are specifically stated to not be able to form Reasons; only humans can do so.^{[citation needed]}

The Demi-fiend is a major player in the creation of the new universe. His decision of which Reason to support is a deciding factor in the outcome, though he cannot form his own Reason, as he is not fully human.

Shijima

Shijima is the reason of Hikawa. It proposes a world of stillness and tranquility where human emotion is removed. It is focused on order.^{[citation needed]}

Musubi

Musubi is the reason of Isamu Nitta. It proposes a world where each person presides over a universe of their own, never coming into contact with each other. Everyone is isolated from one another, but can create their own paradise.^{[citation needed]}

Yosuga

Yosuga is the reason of Chiaki Tachibana. Yosuga is focused on power. Only the powerful and beautiful survive, while the weak die. Fewer problems arise, because only strong and competent people live.^{[citation needed]}
