Origin

Skanda[a] is a deity in Hinduism, especially prominent in Shaivite texts; he is identified as one and the same as Kartikeya and Murugan. Skanda is the son of Shiva and Parvati and defeats the asura Tarakasura.
Skanda (known as Idaten in Japan) is also a protector of the dharma in Mahayana Buddhism.
