Origin

Salah ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub, better known in the west as Saladin, was a Kurdish warrior who became Sultan of Egypt and Syria in 1174, with his rule replacing that of the Fatimid Caliphate. He is most well known for his jihad against the crusaders' Kingdom of Jerusalem in 1187, in which he successfully reclaimed the holy city for Islam in the Battle of Hattin. Western sources praised him for his bravery and honor.

A noble hero of Islamic descent. His full name is Sala ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub. Saladin is his Western name.
After taking part in expeditions to Egypt, he later became the first sultan of Egypt. His control spread to nothern African, and he signed a treaty with the forces of the third Crusade to keep Jerusalem in Muslim hands. Despite being the enemy of the Crusaders, his chivalrous demeanor made him a popular figure.
