Perun is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.
Profile
Origin
According to the Tale of Bygone Years (also known as the Primary Chronicle), Perun[a] was a major deity of the Rus’. His first mention is when Oleg of Kyiv and his men swear by their weapons, by Perun, and by Volos to keep peace with the Byzantine emperor Leo VI and his brother Alexander. He is also invoked by Igor of Kyiv in conjunction with the Christian God as punishers of those who break the peace between the Rus’ and the Byzantines. Thirdly, Perun is mentioned again in an oath by Sviatoslav similar to that of Oleg. Lastly, it is said that Vladimir the Great erected a wooden idol to Perun in Kyiv which had a silver head and golden mustache. This idol was claimed to be located with other idols on the spot where a church dedicated to St. Basil stood at the time the work was written.
His name derives from the common noun for "thunder" or "lightning", and it is believed to be cognate to that of the Baltic thunder deity Perkūnas. As such, Perun is thought to have broader Balto-Slavic (and more distantly, Indo-European) origins. Furthermore, Perun has also been compared with a deity mentioned by Byzantine writer Procopius of Caesarea; Procopius claimed the Sclaveni and Antae (whom he said shared the same customs, institutions, and language) had since ancient times worshiped a single god who was the maker of lightning and lord of all. However, Procopius gives no name for this deity, so identification with Perun is speculatory.
